Creating mindfulness through art: A chat with ceramicist, Abbey Jamieson

Art has a way of making you feel something. A connection or story, brought to life through the artist. Ceramic artist Abbey Jamieson is no exception, making unique, beautiful ceramic pieces with an aim to create more mindfulness through her craft.

‘Interactive Ceramics’ - WIN News Canberra

Look but don't touch is one of the most important rules when viewing art. But a trio of ceramic and textile artists have turned that concept on its head with a totally immersive exhibition.

Pinched Paintings

For this exhibition, Abbey Jamieson and Rowan McGinness have joined forces to produce a playful landscape of painted ceramic objects to challenge painting and ceramic stigmas. By using paint as the surface treatment on the ceramic wares, the intention is to open up new opportunities that are not traditionally accepted in the craft field and push painting into a three-dimensional space.

It's on at ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear Place, Dickson, from January 27 (opening at 6pm) until February 14, 2021.

Emerging Artist Merit Award

As part of the Canberra Potters 2020 Members’ Exhibition my piece, ‘Interconnect - Tea for One’, was chosen to receive The Australian Ceramics Association Emerging Artist Merit Award! A HUGE thank you to @australianceramics for sponsoring this prize and for @moraigmckenna for selecting my piece.

This award gives me a year long membership with The Australian Ceramics Association (TACA) which is super exciting and I can’t wait to learn more about our Australian ceramics community.

POP Maker Profile

“Abbey’s main intention is to encourage the user of the object to take a moment of calm. The tactility of the cup paired with the accompanying heat pack or pebble worry stone base encourages thoughtfulness and mindfulness. Interacting with the experience evokes feelings as you focus on the moment you are in; the surface of the cup you are holding, the scent of the beverage and the process of resting the cup down within its base.
It is a whole experience.”
